Preserving Our County History-Remember History Matters!

Norman County Historical Society

Summer Is Here and We Would Love to See You!

After what seemed to be a long winter, spring is finally here and that means that Prairie Village will be opening for the season on Saturday, May 27th which is Memorial Day weekend. Our volunteers have designed new displays and cleaned the buildings so they are ready for visitors.

NCHS offers educational opportunities and social interaction for children and adults.

One of the most popular activities is Coffee and Conversation” which is held every Wednesday morning from the end of May through September. Click on the Events tab on the top toolbar to see the topic of the week. Adults and children, come to learn about and discuss various topics, primarily dealing with the history of the county. It’s also a social time to visit and enjoy the company of friends and neighbors. Try IT Tuesday’s appeal to the interactive and creative side of our participants with activities such as soap making, weaving, rug making, and a variety of other activities,

The Society’s home in the Log Cabin in Prairie Village has become the gathering place for both young and old. Our motto is “If there is a car in the parking lot- stop in. The coffee is always on.”

Please Support Our Climate-Controlled Storage Project
We must raise $150,000!

The Norman County Historical Society was established in 1947 by a number of forward-thinking members who knew the value of preserving the history of our small rural Minnesota county. From its early beginnings, the goal was to preserve, maintain, and promote the history of Norman County. Even when the flood of 1997 decimated many of the artifacts in the museum, the Society, with the help of many individuals and groups, pulled together and compiled an impressive and ever-growing collection of artifacts that tell the rich story of the people who have lived in the county. Due to the size of our collection, we are in serious need of additional climate-controlled storage for our more fragile artifacts. Photos, papers, and clothing are key items we are preserving for future generations. These items must be maintained in a climate-controlled environment. Our only building that is climate-controlled is the museum and it is bursting at the seams with treasures from the past.
